Park
Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park is a 1,500-acre site near McCalla, Alabama, preserving the ruins of a key 19th-century ironworks that played a vital role in the Confederacy's iron production during the Civil War.
Established around 1830 with early bloomeries and expanded in the 1850s-1860s into three massive blast furnaces built largely by enslaved labor, it produced up to 22 tons of pig iron daily before Union forces destroyed most of it in a 1865 raid.
Today, visitors explore the well-preserved furnace stacks, a historical museum with artifacts like Civil War shells, over 40 restored pioneer log cabins, a working gristmill, plantation structures, and trails for hiking, biking, camping, and other outdoor activities amid wooded landscapes.
