Historical Landmark
Taylor Mill State Historic Site is a preserved 200-year-old "up and down" water-powered sawmill located within the 71-acre Ballard State Forest in Derry, New Hampshire, originally built around 1805 by Robert Taylor on land he purchased in 1799.
The original structure was largely scrapped by 1939 when Ernest Ballard acquired the property, prompting him to source and reassemble a similar mill from Sandown, complete with a new waterwheel, before donating it all to the state in 1953. Today, this rare vertical-saw mill operates seasonally via Beaver Brook's power, offering visitors a glimpse into early American industry through demonstrations, trails around Ballard Pond, and exhibits on its mechanical history.
