The Elms

The Elms, Rhode Island, United States

Historical Landmark

The Elms in Newport, Rhode Island, is a magnificent Gilded Age mansion built between 1899 and 1901 as the summer residence of Edward Julius Berwind, a coal magnate, and his wife Sarah.

Designed by architect Horace Trumbauer, it is modeled after the 18th-century Château d'Asnières in France, exhibiting classical French elegance with American innovation. The house was constructed with fireproof materials and clad in Indiana limestone, featuring 50 rooms over three stories including grand formal spaces like a ballroom and an entrance hall with marble floors and a sweeping staircase. The estate includes meticulously designed gardens inspired by French landscaping and additional buildings such as a large garage built to accommodate automobiles.

The Berwinds hosted lavish social events here until Sarah’s death in 1922, after which Edward’s sister Julia took over as hostess. Upon Julia’s death in 1961, The Elms was nearly demolished but was saved by the Preservation Society of Newport County in 1962. It now operates as a museum open to the public, offering tours that showcase its opulent architecture, the lives of both the affluent family and their servants, and the grandeur of Newport’s Gilded Age.
