Arts Organisation
WaterFire is an internationally acclaimed arts organization based in Providence, Rhode Island, known for its evocative public art installation along the city's downtown rivers.
Created by Barnaby Evans in 1994, WaterFire features a series of more than 80 bonfires lit on floating braziers that illuminate the three rivers flowing through Providence. This sensory-rich experience combines the flickering firelight, aromatic wood smoke, torchlit fire tenders, music from around the world, and torchlit boats, captivating millions of visitors since its inception.
It began as a temporary event for First Night Providence and quickly became a beloved tradition, symbolizing the city's cultural renaissance and community spirit. Supported by hundreds of volunteers and sponsors, WaterFire promotes urban revitalization through art and attracts nearly one million people annually, contributing significantly to Providence's economy and cultural identity.
The event is free and open to the public and takes place multiple times from spring to late fall, blending visual art, performance, and community engagement in a unique celebration of fire and water.
