History Museum
The World Museum of Mining in Butte, Montana, opened in 1965 and is located on the site of the historic Orphan Girl Mine, which operated from 1875 to 1956, producing silver, lead, and zinc.
The museum offers a unique experience with more than 50 buildings across 22 acres, including a re-creation of an 1890s mining town called Hell Roarin’ Gulch, filled with authentic artifacts and period structures moved from around Montana.
Visitors can explore the original 100-foot steel headframe, hoist house, and take guided tours 100 feet underground in the former mine, gaining insight into the challenging working conditions of miners. The museum also honors miners who lost their lives with a memorial and showcases extensive equipment and exhibits on Montana's mining history, engineering, labor, and community life.
It provides a vivid, immersive look into the technology, culture, and human stories of Butte's mining legacy.
