National Park
Acadia National Park, located mainly on Mount Desert Island in Maine, was first established as Sieur de Monts National Monument by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916 through lands donated by private citizens to preserve the area's natural beauty.
It was later redesignated Lafayette National Park in 1919, becoming the first national park east of the Mississippi River, and was renamed Acadia National Park in 1929 to honor the French colony of Acadia that once encompassed the region. The park covers more than 47,000 acres of rugged coastline, mountains, forests, lakes, and wetlands, with iconic landmarks such as Cadillac Mountain, the first place to see sunrise in the U.S. during parts of the year.
John D. Rockefeller Jr. played a significant role in developing the park’s carriage roads and trails, enhancing access while maintaining wilderness character. Acadia supports diverse ecosystems and recreational activities including hiking, biking, wildlife viewing, and scenic driving, making it one of the most visited national parks in the country and a treasured symbol of conservation and natural beauty in New England.
