Park
Afognak Island State Park spans 75,047 acres on Afognak Island northeast of Kodiak Island in Alaska's Kodiak Archipelago, featuring rugged mountains, old-growth Sitka spruce forests, grasslands, streams, lakes, and coastal bays like Perenosa, Seal, and Tonki. Established in 1892 as a forest and fish reserve and bordering Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, it's accessible only by floatplane or boat from Kodiak, with two public-use cabins at Pillar and Laura Lakes amid mostly undeveloped wilderness. The remote park supports abundant wildlife including Kodiak brown bears, Roosevelt elk, Sitka black-tailed deer, bald eagles, marbled murrelets, and salmon spawning grounds, offering year-round fishing, hunting, hiking, boating, camping, photography, and pristine exploration.
