Ames Monument State Historic Site, Wyoming, United States

Historical Landmark

Ames Monument State Historic Site is a striking 60-foot-high granite pyramid located 20 miles east of Laramie in Albany County, Wyoming, at the summit of Interstate 80's Vedauwoo exit, marking the original highest point (8,247 feet) on the 1869 Transcontinental Railroad. Completed in 1882 for $65,000 by the Union Pacific Railroad, the Richardsonian-style structure designed by Henry Hobson Richardson honors Massachusetts brothers Oakes and Oliver Ames Jr., whose financing and influence were pivotal to the railroad's construction despite Oakes' involvement in the Crédit Mobilier scandal. Featuring weathered bas-relief portraits by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, it stands near the site of the abandoned rail town Sherman and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, open year-round with picnic areas and interpretive signs but no facilities.
