Medicine Lodge Archaeological Site, located six miles northeast of Hyattville in northeastern Big Horn County, Wyoming, at the base of a 750-foot sandstone cliff along Medicine Lodge Creek, preserves over 10,000 years of continuous Native American occupation from Paleoindian through Archaic and prehistoric periods, revealed through excavations uncovering 60 cultural layers with fire pits, storage pits, grinding stones, and projectile points.
Acquired in 1972 by Wyoming Game and Fish from the historic Wickwire Ranch as part of a 12,000-acre Wildlife Habitat Management Area, it features thousands of pictographs and petroglyphs on the sheltered cliff face dating back 2,000 years, interpreted via three small museums in restored log cabins displaying artifacts like arrowheads, pottery, and ranching history.
Open seasonally with interpretive trails, guided tours, fishing, hiking, and wildlife viewing amid cottonwood riparian zones, it stands as a premier archaeological destination on the National Register of Historic Places.
