The Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA) is a 148‑ to 152‑mile‑long state‑managed corridor along the upper Arkansas River in central Colorado, stretching from near Leadville downstream to the Pueblo Reservoir.
It is jointly administered by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the Bureau of Land Management, and the U.S. Forest Service, with its main visitor center in Salida serving as a hub for information and maps. The area is best known for world‑class whitewater rafting, kayaking, and canoeing through deep canyons and rocky gorges, as well as for some of Colorado’s longest stretches of Gold‑Medal trout fishing water.
Visitors also enjoy camping in and around riverside campgrounds, hiking, biking, wildlife watching (including bighorn sheep), rock climbing, and even gold‑panning, all within a dramatic mountain‑valley landscape that includes forests, canyons, and high‑alpine scenery.
