Museum
Belcourt of Newport in Rhode Island is a historic mansion originally built between 1891 and 1894 as a summer "cottage" designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt for socialite Oliver Hazard Perry Belmont.
Unlike typical mansions, the entire first floor was dedicated to stables and carriage space, reflecting Belmont's passion for horses. After marrying Alva Vanderbilt, a prominent social figure, the mansion underwent significant interior redesigns, blending French Renaissance, Gothic, and other European styles and becoming a hub for lavish social events.
Over the years, Belcourt played host to the country’s first automobile parade and nearly became the permanent venue for the Newport Jazz Festival. The mansion later passed through several owners before being restored and transformed into a museum open to the public.
Today, it features more than 60 rooms filled with antiques, art, and artifacts from around the world, showcasing both its architectural uniqueness and its rich Gilded Age social history.
