Black Rock State Park is a 444-acre public recreation area located in Watertown, Connecticut, that sits among the scenic rolling hills of the Western Highlands.
The park derives its name from local graphite deposits that Native Americans historically allowed early settlers to mine in the 17th century. Established in 1926 through a land donation by the Black Rock Forest organization and later developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, the park is known for its steep, wooded ledges and mature forests.
It offers a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking along the blue-blazed Mattatuck Trail which connects to the adjacent Mattatuck State Forest, as well as swimming and trout fishing in Black Rock Pond. With 78 seasonal campsites and numerous side trails offering views of Black Rock Lake and the Naugatuck Valley, the park provides a versatile destination for both quick day trips and extended outdoor excursions.
