Historical Landmark
Buffalo Bill Dam, located near Cody, Wyoming, on the Shoshone River, was constructed between 1905 and 1910 and was originally named Shoshone Dam before being renamed in 1946 to honor Buffalo Bill Cody.
At 325 feet tall when completed, it was the highest dam in the world and one of the earliest concrete arch dams in the United States, designed to support irrigation for over 90,000 acres of farmland in the Shoshone Project. The construction faced many challenges including flooding, harsh weather, and dangerous working conditions, which led to Wyoming's first labor strike; seven workers lost their lives during the process.
In 1993, the dam's crest was raised to increase water storage capacity for Buffalo Bill Reservoir. The site also hosts a visitor center that provides educational exhibits about the dam's history, significance, and the engineering innovations involved. The dam remains a landmark symbolizing early 20th-century engineering achievements and Buffalo Bill’s vision for western development.
