Camp Columbia State Park and Forest is a 600-acre public recreation area located in the town of Morris, Connecticut, with a unique history as the former summer engineering campus for Columbia University.
From 1903 to 1983, the site served as a training ground for students, including military combat training during World War I, where hundreds of yards of trenches were dug to simulate European warfare conditions. Today, visitors can still see remnants of these historical training trenches, along with a distinctive 60-foot fieldstone water tower built in 1942 that serves as a landmark for the property.
The park and forest are managed for public enjoyment, offering over three miles of trails that are open for hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. Adjoining the South Bay of Bantam Lake, the site provides a peaceful, nature-filled escape that blends Connecticut’s agricultural and industrial past with beautiful, reclaimed woodlands.
