Park and Garden
Canyon de Chelly National Monument in northeastern Arizona is a vast, sandstone-walled canyon system covering over 83,000 acres and composed of three major canyons: de Chelly, del Muerto, and Monument.
It is unique as it is owned and cooperatively managed by the Navajo Nation and the National Park Service, with Navajo families continuing to live and farm in the canyon. The monument features towering red rock walls, ancient cliff dwellings and ruins dating back from 350 to 1300 CE, and numerous petroglyphs and pictographs from the Ancestral Puebloans.
The iconic Spider Rock spire rises 750 feet from the canyon floor and is considered sacred in Navajo culture. Most visitors explore the monument via scenic rim drives with overlooks, while access to the canyon floor requires a Navajo guide or ranger, offering horseback, hiking, or Jeep tours.
The site combines stunning natural beauty with deep cultural heritage, reflecting thousands of years of continuous human occupation and Navajo traditions that persist today.
