Cape Disappointment State Park covers 2,023 acres on Washington’s Long Beach Peninsula where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean, named after Captain John Meares’ failed 1788 attempt to locate the river and later visited by Lewis and Clark during their 1805 expedition.
It features old-growth forests, freshwater lakes, marshes, two historic lighthouses including the oldest functioning one on the West Coast from 1856, Fort Canby ruins from World War II, and the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center with exhibits overlooking the “Graveyard of the Pacific” waters.
Visitors enjoy 27 miles of beach, 8 miles of hiking trails, camping with 137 sites plus yurts and cabins, fishing, surfing, and year-round access requiring a Discover Pass.
