City of Rocks State Park spans one square mile in the Mimbres River Valley of southwestern New Mexico's Chihuahuan Desert at 5,200 feet elevation, halfway between Deming and Silver City off US 180 and NM 61.
Formed 34.9 million years ago from volcanic tuff eroded into dramatic 40-foot pinnacles resembling a surreal stone city with streets and courtyards, it features 10 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails weaving among unique formations found in only six other places worldwide.
Visitors enjoy camping amid the rocks, a desert botanical garden with cacti and yuccas, stargazing under dark skies at a gold-certified observatory, picnicking shelters, wildlife viewing for jackrabbits and golden eagles, petroglyphs, and a modern visitor center with exhibits and showers.
