Historical Landmark
Connor Battlefield State Historic Site in Ranchester, Wyoming, along the Tongue River just off I-90, commemorates the August 29, 1865, Battle of Tongue River, where Brigadier General Patrick E. Connor's 250 U.S. soldiers and 80 Pawnee scouts surprised and attacked an Arapaho village of about 500 people led by Chief Black Bear and Old David during the Powder River Indian Expedition. The assault overran the camp as the Arapaho were packing to leave, killing around 63 warriors including Black Bear's son, burning lodges and supplies, capturing women and children later released, and driving off hundreds of ponies while the defenders fought a fierce rear-guard action up Wolf Creek forcing Connor's withdrawal. Now a Wyoming State Parks-managed site with picnic grounds, campground, and monument amid cottonwood trees on three river sides, it highlights this pivotal clash aimed at punishing tribes for emigrant trail raids, listed on the National Register of Historic Places with no visible battle remnants today.
