Park
Dennis Hill State Park is a 240-acre public recreation area located in Norfolk, Connecticut, that was once the private estate of the prominent New York surgeon Dr. Frederick Shepard Dennis.
Gifted to the state in 1935, the park centers around the 1,627-foot summit of Dennis Hill, an ancient volcano composed of some of the oldest rock formations in Connecticut. The summit features a distinctive bungalow-style pavilion, which once served as a summer residence for Dr. Dennis and later as a World War II lookout, offering panoramic views that can reach as far as Mount Greylock, the Green Mountains, and even parts of New Hampshire on clear days.
Visitors to the park can enjoy hiking along scenic trails, picnicking in quiet areas, or taking a seasonal drive up to the summit. A unique geographical feature of the hill is its position within three distinct watersheds—the Blackberry, Housatonic, and Farmington Rivers—meaning water from the summit eventually flows toward three different destinations. Today, the park remains a peaceful and popular destination for sightseeing, photography, and experiencing the vibrant fall foliage of the Litchfield Hills.
