Museum
Drayton Hall, located near Charleston, South Carolina, is an exceptionally well-preserved 18th-century plantation house and one of the earliest examples of Palladian architecture in America, built between 1748 and 1752.
Unlike many other historic plantations, it has never been modernized with electricity, plumbing, or heating, preserving the original materials and architectural features. The estate was home to seven generations of the Drayton family, wealthy members of colonial society, and was also a site where enslaved African people lived and worked, whose history is now an important part of the site's interpretation.
Drayton Hall survived both the Revolutionary War and the Civil War intact, and it became a museum under the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1974, focusing on architectural preservation and honest storytelling.
Visitors today can explore the house, outbuildings, and grounds while learning about the complex layered histories of the plantation owners and the enslaved community, making it a significant cultural and educational site in the American South.
