Park
Fishers Peak State Park is Colorado’s newest and second‑largest state park, covering about 19,200 acres just south of Trinidad in Las Animas County along the western edge of the Great Plains.
The park centers on Fishers Peak, a 9,633‑foot flat‑topped butte that rises prominently from the Raton Mesa and overlooks a mix of grasslands, foothills, and forested slopes. It was established in 2020 after a major collaboration between Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the City of Trinidad, The Nature Conservancy, the Trust for Public Land, and Great Outdoors Colorado to protect the area as a wildlife corridor connecting prairie and mountain ecosystems.
The park is known for its abundant wildlife, including elk, mule deer, white‑tailed deer, black bear, mountain lions, and the endangered New Mexico meadow jumping mouse, as well as for rare raptors such as nesting peregrine falcons, some areas of which are seasonally closed for protection.
For visitors, the park is currently open for day use only, with a trailhead providing access to more than 13–16 miles of hiking and biking trails, scenic overlooks, picnic areas, and restrooms on a small, developed section of the larger property.
