Fort Laramie National Historic Site

Fort Laramie National Historic Site, Wyoming, United States

Historical Place

Fort Laramie National Historic Site in southeastern Wyoming began as a fur trading post in 1834, established by fur traders William Sublette and Robert Campbell at the confluence of the Laramie and North Platte Rivers.

It was situated along key overland trails and became a vital rest and resupply point for thousands of emigrants heading west on the Oregon, California, and Mormon Trails. Purchased by the U.S. Army in 1849, it served as a military post for 41 years, playing a significant role in the Indian Wars and the Great Sioux War of 1876 as a supply and communication base.

The site witnessed major treaties, battles, and the transition of the American West from Native lands to settlement and ranching. The fort was abandoned in 1890 as the frontier era ended. It was later restored and designated a national historic site, now preserving over 25 buildings illustrating early western trade, military, and pioneer life, and interpreting the complex history between Native Americans, settlers, and the U.S. government.
