Fort Reno in Wyoming, located on a high plateau along the Powder River near the Bozeman Trail crossing in Johnson County, served as a short-lived U.S. Army outpost established in August 1865 during General Patrick Connor's Powder River Expedition against Lakota Sioux, Arapaho, and Cheyenne tribes resisting emigrant travel through their hunting grounds.
Originally named Fort Connor, it was renamed in November 1865 for Union General Jesse L. Reno and enlarged in 1866 by Colonel Henry Carrington's 18th Infantry with log stockades, blockhouses, and adobe quarters to protect the trail as a supply depot for forts Phil Kearny and C.F. Smith amid escalating conflicts like the Fetterman Fight.
Abandoned in 1868 under the Treaty of Fort Laramie closing the Bozeman Trail, Native forces burned it, leaving only shallow depressions marked today by a monument amid the remote plains.
