State Park
Fort Worden Historical State Park in Port Townsend, Washington, spans 433 acres and preserves a well-maintained former U.S. Army coastal defense base constructed between 1898 and 1920 as part of the Endicott Board’s modernization program to protect Puget Sound.
Named after Admiral John Lorimer Worden, the fort was the largest of the “Triangle of Fire” installations guarding the naval shipyard and nearby cities. The park features over 50 original buildings including officers’ quarters available for lodging, 12 gun batteries with artillery positions that visitors can explore, historic museums, and a spacious shoreline along Admiralty Inlet.
The fort never fired in combat but served as a strategic military headquarters until it was decommissioned in 1953. Today, Fort Worden offers hiking and biking trails, camping, educational programs, festivals, and arts events, blending military history with natural beauty and recreational amenities. The site's preservation as a National Historic Landmark presents an immersive experience of coastal defense architecture and Puget Sound heritage.
