Historical Place
Guernsey Ruts, also known as Oregon Trail Ruts State Historic Site, lies just south of Guernsey, Wyoming, along the North Platte River where emigrants on the Oregon Trail were forced to climb a steep sandstone ridge toward South Pass.
Thousands of iron-shod wagon wheels, draft animals, and people from 1841 to 1869 carved ruts two to six feet deep into the soft sandstone over a half-mile stretch, creating the most prominent and best-preserved wagon tracks anywhere along the 2,000-mile trail used by over 300,000 pioneers.
This National Historic Landmark, administered by Guernsey State Park, offers public access to walk among the dramatic grooves, interpretive signs tracing the route first used in 1812, and vivid evidence of westward migration until the 1869 Union Pacific Railroad diminished overland travel.
