Park
Lamentation Mountain State Park is a small, 47-acre undeveloped public recreation area located in Berlin, Connecticut, established in 1936.
The park covers a steep, rugged hillside along the eastern side of the Berlin Turnpike, serving primarily as protected natural space rather than a developed recreational facility. While the park itself is relatively modest, it is situated along the ridgeline of the larger Lamentation Mountain, a prominent traprock formation and part of the 50-mile Mattabesett Trail.
Long-distance hikers traversing this trail can access a primitive, non-reservable tent site within the park, though it offers no amenities such as potable water. The name of the mountain and park is said to originate from a 17th-century legend about a local resident, Leonard Chester, who became lost in the wilderness and prompted search parties to wander the area uttering "lamentations" until he was found.
Despite the park's limited development, its location on the Metacomet Ridge provides visitors and hikers with access to scenic vistas and unique geological features characteristic of the region.
