Marble House in Newport, Rhode Island, is a grand Gilded Age mansion built between 1888 and 1892 as a summer "cottage" for William Kissam Vanderbilt and his wife Alva Vanderbilt.
Designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt and inspired by the Petit Trianon at Versailles, it is an early example of Beaux-Arts architecture in America, constructed with 500,000 cubic feet of white marble, which gave the mansion its name. The 50-room estate, set on 4.4 acres overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, featured lavish interiors by the French design firm Jules Allard & Sons and required a staff of 36 to maintain.
Alva Vanderbilt, a prominent socialite and women's suffrage advocate, hosted extravagant balls and suffrage rallies here, including in the Chinese Tea House she added later. The house marked a pivotal moment in Newport’s transformation into a resort of opulent stone palaces.
Today it is a museum operated by the Preservation Society of Newport County and is designated a National Historic Landmark, illustrating the ambition and luxury of America's elite during the Gilded Age.
