Park
Morphy Lake State Park is a small, 30-acre park in northern New Mexico's Sangre de Cristo Mountains, about 7 miles southwest of Mora, featuring a scenic 15-acre lake at around 8,000 feet elevation near the Pecos Wilderness.
Created by an earthen dam in the late 1930s on a natural basin, the lake is stocked with rainbow trout and kokanee salmon, drawing anglers for year-round fishing including popular ice fishing in winter, while non-motorized boats like canoes are allowed but gas motors are banned.
Visitors enjoy primitive camping at 26 developed sites (first-come, first-served, max 18-foot RVs due to narrow roads), picnicking, hiking amid pine forests and wildflowers, and wildlife viewing of birds, deer, bears, and more, though there's no running water so all must be packed in.
The park typically closes from late October through February but offers stunning alpine views and a rustic, secluded feel during its peak season from March to October.
