Names Hill Historic Site, Wyoming, United States

Historical Landmark

Names Hill Historic Site, located on the west side of U.S. Highway 189 about six miles south of La Barge in Lincoln County, Wyoming, is a prominent sandstone bluff overlooking a key Green River crossing on the Oregon-California Trail and Sublette-Greenwood Cutoff.

Pioneers, mountain men, and Native Americans inscribed names, dates, and pictographs into the soft limestone starting as early as 1822—making it Wyoming's oldest pioneer inscription site—with Jim Bridger's famous 1844 marking (despite his illiteracy) protected by fencing amid hundreds of weathered signatures.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1969 and managed by Fort Bridger State Historic Site, it features interpretive signs and a monument highlighting emigrant travel alongside Register Cliff and Independence Rock.
