Park and Garden
Pecos National Historical Park in New Mexico preserves over 6,000 acres of layered history in the Pecos River Valley east of Santa Fe, featuring the ruins of Pecos Pueblo—known as Cicuye—a major Ancestral Puebloan settlement housing up to 2,000 people in multi-story complexes with over 20 ceremonial kivas from around AD 1100 until abandonment in 1838 amid disease, raids, and migration to Jemez Pueblo.
The site includes remnants of a 17th-century Spanish mission church built in 1619 near the pueblo, which endured the 1680 Pueblo Revolt and saw a smaller church constructed in 1717, plus segments of the Santa Fe Trail, Civil War Battle of Glorieta Pass sites from 1862, and 20th-century Forked Lightning Ranch structures blending Pueblo Revival architecture with ranching heritage.
Visitors follow a 1.25-mile self-guided trail from the museum-filled visitor center through these interconnected stories of trade, conflict, and cultural crossroads among Native Americans, Spaniards, Plains tribes, and pioneers, open daily except major holidays.
