National Park
Petrified Forest National Park in northeastern Arizona spans approximately 346 square miles within the Painted Desert and is best known for its extensive and colorful deposits of petrified wood dating back around 225 million years to the Late Triassic Epoch.
The park showcases fossilized trees, ancient plants, early reptile and dinosaur fossils, and striking badlands of brightly colored rock formations. It has a dry, windy climate with diverse wildlife and over 400 plant species. The park contains more than 1,000 archaeological sites, including petroglyphs from ancestral Puebloan communities.
Established as a national monument in 1906 and redesignated a national park in 1962, it offers hiking trails, scenic drives along Historic Route 66, visitor centers with educational exhibits, and wilderness areas preserving natural and cultural heritage. The park highlights geological and paleontological wonders and remains a vital cultural area for Native American tribes including the Navajo and Hopi.
