Historical Landmark
POW Camp Douglas Officers' Club State Historic Site in Douglas, Wyoming, preserves the sole surviving building from Wyoming's main World War II prisoner-of-war camp, which operated from 1943 to 1946 and housed up to 2,000 Italian and 3,000 German POWs plus 500 U.S. Army personnel across 180 structures spanning over a square mile—larger than the town itself. Constructed in spring 1943 as the camp's officers' club, this utilitarian wood-framed, stucco-covered rectangular building with a gable roof and enclosed porch features preserved interior murals of western scenes painted by Italian POWs inspired by artists like Charles Russell and William Henry Jackson. After the war, it served civic groups including the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, gained National Register of Historic Places status in 2001, and became a Wyoming State Historic Site in 2015, now managed by Wyoming State Parks with summer exhibits, interpretive displays, and limited public access by reservation.
