Rough Point is a grand Gilded Age mansion in Newport, Rhode Island, originally built between 1887 and 1892 for Frederick William Vanderbilt.
Designed in the English Manorial style by the architect firm Peabody & Stearns, it sits on Bellevue Avenue along Newport’s famous Cliff Walk and overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. The estate is also known for its original gardens designed by the firm of Frederick Law Olmsted. Its last private owner was Doris Duke, a wealthy heiress, collector, and philanthropist who lived there from 1922 until her death in 1993. She filled the mansion with an extensive collection of fine and decorative arts, including paintings by Gainsborough, Van Dyck, and Renoir, as well as Baroque and Rococo sculptures, Renaissance tapestries, and Chinese ceramics.
The house retains much of her personal touch, from the opulent décor to everyday items. Today, owned by the Newport Restoration Foundation, Rough Point operates as a museum open to the public with seasonal guided tours that showcase the historic architecture, impressive art collection, and the legacy of Doris Duke, offering visitors a glimpse into the affluent lifestyle of Newport’s Gilded Age.
