National Park
Saguaro National Park in southeastern Arizona protects an iconic example of the Sonoran Desert ecosystem and is especially known for its vast forests of saguaro cacti, the towering symbols of the American Southwest.
The park is divided into two separate districts on either side of Tucson: the Tucson Mountain District on the west and the Rincon Mountain District on the east. Together they cover about 92,000 acres, encompassing desert landscapes, mountain foothills, and higher elevation areas.
The park’s giant saguaros can grow up to 60 feet tall and live as long as 200 years, with some reaching over 50 feet in height. Besides saguaros, the park hosts a rich diversity of desert plants like chollas, prickly pears, and palo verdes, and a variety of wildlife including coyotes, javelinas, black bears, and many bird species.
The Rincon Mountain District offers varied habitats from desert scrub at low elevations to pine and mixed conifer forests at higher elevations, supporting more diverse wildlife, while the Tucson Mountain District features typical Sonoran Desert vegetation. Visitors can explore over 165 miles of hiking trails, enjoy scenic drives through cactus forests, and experience cultural history connected to early inhabitants and Native American use of the land.
The park also manages invasive species threats like buffelgrass that endanger the native desert ecosystem. Overall, Saguaro National Park offers a unique, beautiful, and biologically rich desert environment centered around the majestic saguaro cactus and its surrounding desert life.
