San Rafael State Natural Area in Santa Cruz County, southern Arizona, encompasses around 22,000 acres of rolling grassland valleys, riparian zones with oak and cottonwood trees, and the headwaters of the Santa Cruz River that flows south into Mexico before looping back north to join the Gila River.
This ecologically sensitive preserve protects native shortgrass prairie, endangered Huachuca water umbel plants, and wildlife like mule deer, javelina, pronghorn antelope, bobcats, cougars, coyotes, and unique prairie birds amid the Patagonia, Canelo Hills, and Huachuca Mountains.
Currently closed to the public as part of the larger San Rafael Short Grass Prairie Preserve near the border, it prioritizes habitat conservation, wildlife migration corridors for species like jaguars and ocelots, and historical ranch elements rather than visitor recreation.
