Smith Mansion, Wyoming, United States

Tourist Attraction

Smith Mansion in Wyoming, also known as the Smith Family Cabin, is a large, unique, multi-story log structure located in Wapiti Valley near Cody and Yellowstone National Park.

Built by Francis Lee Smith starting in 1971 using locally harvested wood, the house grew in a seemingly haphazard manner with protruding staircases, balconies, and terraces, eventually reaching about 75 feet tall. Smith initially built it as a family home without electricity or running water, but his obsession with continuous building caused strain on his marriage, leading to his divorce.

Tragically, Smith died in 1992 after falling from the roof during construction. The mansion has become a local landmark visible from the road, known for its striking architecture and mysterious aura. The property, now owned by Smith's daughter, remains vacant and slowly decaying, with ongoing interest in preserving or repurposing this distinctive Wyoming landmark.
