Park and Garden
Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens, New York, is a five-acre outdoor museum and public park founded in 1986 by sculptor Mark di Suvero.
The park transformed a former abandoned landfill and illegal dumpsite on the East River waterfront into a vibrant cultural space where artists create and exhibit large-scale sculptures and multimedia installations. Named to honor the Greek community in nearby Astoria and inspired by the philosopher Socrates, the park became a permanent city park in 1998, protecting it from development.
It is unique in allowing visitors to witness artworks being built on-site and features rotating exhibitions with no permanent collection. Besides its role as an art venue, the park serves as a green space for locals and hosts public programs including outdoor film screenings, yoga, farmers markets, and cultural festivals. It has become a celebrated example of urban land reclamation fostering creativity, community engagement, and open access to public art.
