The Breakers

The Breakers, Rhode Island, United States

Historical Place Museum

The Breakers in Newport, Rhode Island, is a grand Gilded Age mansion built between 1893 and 1895 as a summer home for Cornelius Vanderbilt II, a prominent member of the wealthy Vanderbilt family.

Designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt in the Renaissance Revival style, the 70-room structure was created with fireproof materials including masonry and steel trusses, reflecting Vanderbilt's concern for safety after a previous fire destroyed the earlier wooden mansion on the site. The mansion features lavish interiors decorated by French firms Jules Allard and Sons and Ogden Codman Jr., with extensive use of imported marble, intricate mosaics, and historic European architectural elements.

The estate’s expansive grounds include a 12-foot-high limestone and iron fence and stunning ocean views overlooking Easton Bay. After Cornelius’s death in 1899, the house passed to his widow Alice and later to their youngest daughter, Countess Gladys Széchenyi, who ultimately allowed the Preservation Society of Newport County to manage the home as a museum.

Today, The Breakers is a National Historic Landmark open to the public, offering a glimpse into the opulence and social history of America's Gilded Age elite.
