Established as one of Alaska's 35 state marine parks, it protects a pristine coastal wilderness historically tied to Tlingit settlements, ancient villages near Thoms Creek—a major sockeye salmon stream—and late 19th-century commercial fishing with seine nets and fish traps.
The sheltered cove offers low-impact recreation like boating, kayaking, wildlife viewing of whales, sea otters, bears, deer, and birds, plus wilderness camping and subsistence fishing amid temperate rainforest, though nearby logging has impacted some surrounding areas.
