Park
Trinidad Lake State Park is a Colorado state park of about 2,900–2,960 acres located roughly 4 miles west of the city of Trinidad in the foothills of the Culebra Range of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
The park centers on Trinidad Lake, an 800‑acre reservoir formed by the Trinidad Dam on the Purgatoire River, originally built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for flood control and irrigation but now managed as a major recreation area. Visitors enjoy boating, fishing for species such as rainbow and brown trout, bass, catfish, and walleye, along with waterskiing, windsurfing, camping, hiking, biking, and wildlife viewing in a relatively mild, low‑altitude setting.
The park also features geological and historical interest, including a well‑exposed Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary (K–Pg boundary) linked to the dinosaurs’ extinction and nearby coal‑mining heritage sites, making it both a recreational hub and a quiet base for exploring southern Colorado.
