Local citizens donated initial land in 1921 to preserve timber, with prisoners from nearby Anamosa State Penitentiary handcrafting stone arch bridges, shelters, lodge, and roads from local limestone over decades, including Iowa's last three-span bowstring arch bridge.
Visitors enjoy hiking and multi-use trails to caves like historic Horse Thief Cave and chilly Ice Cave used by Native Americans, boating, fishing, camping, picnicking, a nine-hole golf course doubling as winter sledding hill, hunting, and exploring moss-covered bluffs with columbine wildflowers.
