Park

Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park in Yuma, Arizona, preserves the notorious "Hellhole of the West," a territorial prison operational from July 1, 1876, to 1909, when overcrowding prompted its closure and transfer of 3,069 inmates—including 29 women convicted of crimes from murder to polygamy—to a new facility in Florence.

Authorized by the Arizona Territory legislature with a $25,000 budget, prisoners quarried on-site granite to construct the facility starting April 1876, featuring original cellblocks, a sally port, guard tower, and the infamous Dark Cell for solitary confinement, all continuously expanded with inmate labor.

After serving variously as a high school, hospital, and Depression-era shelter, preservation efforts from the 1930s culminated in its transfer to Arizona State Parks for $1 in 1960, opening as a historic park in 1961 with a museum highlighting inmate stories like stagecoach robber Pearl Hart, brutal conditions, and Yuma's Wild West role at the vital Colorado River crossing.
