Battle of Musgrove Mill State Historic Site in Clinton, South Carolina, preserves the August 19, 1780, Revolutionary War battlefield where 200 outnumbered Patriot militiamen from South Carolina, Georgia, and Overmountain Men under Colonels Isaac Shelby, James Williams, and Elijah Clarke ambushed and routed nearly 500 Loyalist militia and British provincials at Musgrove's Mill on the Enoree River, suffering only four killed while inflicting 63 enemy deaths, 90 wounded, and 70 captured.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1975, the 380-acre site features a recreated log breastwork, reenactment field, 1.5-mile interpretive trail through woods where Patriots feigned a retreat to spring their trap, visitor center with interactive exhibits on backcountry civil war tactics, and programs highlighting this turning point momentum before Kings Mountain. Visitors enjoy self-guided hikes, living history events, picnicking, and wildlife viewing in the serene Upcountry setting near I-26.
