Park
Battle of Rivers Bridge State Historic Site in Ehrhardt, South Carolina, preserves the only Civil War battlefield in the state's park system, where 1,200 Confederates under Maj. Gen. Lafayette McLaws made one of their final stands against 5,000 Union troops led by Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman on February 2-3, 1865, across the swampy Salkehatchie River.
The 390-acre site features intact earthen fortifications, a ¾-mile award-winning interpretive trail detailing the two-day clash that delayed Sherman's march to Columbia, a Confederate mass grave established in 1876, memorial grounds, and a community building for events.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1972, it offers self-guided tours, ranger-led programs, birdwatching, and picnicking amid the preserved landscape.
