State Park
Brandywine Creek State Park in Delaware covers about 933 acres and was created in 1965 from land that was once part of the du Pont family's Winterthur estate.
The estate had been a dairy farm with distinctive blue gneiss stone walls built by Italian masons in the 19th century, many of which still remain throughout the park. The park expanded in 1981 with an additional 500 acres donated by the Woodlawn Trustees, founded by William Poole Bancroft, a conservationist who aimed to preserve open space in the Brandywine region.
The park features rolling meadows, nature preserves including Delaware’s first two nature preserves—the Tulip Tree Woods and Freshwater Marsh—home to old-growth forests and rare songbirds. It offers about 14 miles of trails for hiking and biking, fishing in Brandywine Creek and Wilson’s Run, and rich biodiversity characteristic of the Piedmont region’s forests.
The park’s scenic and ecological value is complemented by its historical significance, embodying both natural beauty and the legacy of land conservation in Delaware.
