Park
El Vado Lake State Park encompasses 1,730 acres at 7,209 feet elevation in the northern mountains of Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, about 12 miles southwest of Tierra Amarilla along State Road 112 on the eastern shore of El Vado Reservoir.
Created by a 175-foot-high dam on the Rio Chama completed in 1935, the 3,200-acre lake supports boating with unrestricted speeds, two ramps, a marina, dock, rentals, and rentals for kayaks and pontoons, plus excellent fishing for trout and kokanee salmon in quiet coves.
The park provides 80 developed campsites including 17 with water/electric (30 amp) and two full-hookup sites, four group areas, RV dump station, modern restrooms, showers, beach, playground, visitor center, and a 5.5-mile scenic trail linking to Heron Lake State Park via suspension bridge for hiking, horseback riding, biking, birdwatching (notably bald eagles), and winter skiing or snowshoeing.
