Fort Bridger State Historic Site in Wyoming was originally established in 1843 by mountain men Jim Bridger and Louis Vasquez as a fur trading post and later became a crucial resupply point for emigrants traveling on the Oregon, California, and Mormon Trails.
The fort was strategically located on Blacks Fork of the Green River and consisted of double-log houses and a blacksmith’s shop, offering supplies and repairs to westward travelers. Throughout its history, Fort Bridger was controlled by various groups, including the Mormons, who built a stone wall around it in the 1850s, and the U.S. Army, which used it as a military outpost during and after the Utah War until it closed in 1890.
The site played an important role in regional trade and military operations as well as negotiations with Native American tribes, notably with the Fort Bridger Treaty of 1868. Today, the historic site includes restored structures, a museum housing artifacts from multiple eras, an interpretive archaeological site, and a reconstructed trading post, preserving the diverse history of this frontier hub and its significance in Wyoming's western expansion.
