Fort Mose Historic State Park, a 40-acre waterfront site near St. Augustine in Florida, USA, marks the location of Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mose, the first legally sanctioned free Black settlement in what became the United States, established in 1738 by Spanish governor Manuel de Montiano as a refuge for enslaved Africans fleeing British colonies to the north.
This fortified military and residential community of about 100 people guarded St. Augustine's northern approach until destroyed in 1740 and rebuilt in 1752, later abandoned when Florida transferred to British control in 1763, with a historically accurate replica fort completed and opened to visitors in May 2025.
Open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset, the park features an interactive museum and visitor center detailing its story, a recreated wooden fort, picnic areas, boardwalks for birding great blue herons, bald eagles, and white ibis, and kayak launches into surrounding salt marshes.
