Fort Phil Kearny State Historic Site, Wyoming, United States

Historical Place Museum

Fort Phil Kearny State Historic Site in Wyoming preserves the location of a U.S. Army fort established in 1866 along the Bozeman Trail to protect settlers traveling to Montana’s gold fields.

It was the largest and most important of three forts built on the trail and played a key role in Red Cloud's War, a conflict between the U.S. Army and Lakota Sioux and Cheyenne tribes who opposed the fort’s presence on their hunting grounds.

The fort was heavily fortified with an eight-foot-high log stockade enclosing 17 acres and was the site of significant battles such as the Fetterman Fight in 1866 and the Wagon Box Fight in 1867. Following the 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie, the U.S. government abandoned the fort and later the site was burned down by Native American forces.

Today, the historic site includes a visitors center, interpretive trails, and partial stockade reconstruction, offering educational insights into this turbulent period of American and Native American history.
