Heron Lake State Park

Heron Lake State Park, New Mexico, United States

Park

Heron Lake State Park sits along the southern shore of its namesake 5,900-acre reservoir in northern New Mexico's Rio Arriba County, at 7,167 feet elevation amid tall pines near Tierra Amarilla, about 80 miles northwest of Santa Fe.

Formed by Heron Dam completed in 1971 as part of the San Juan-Chama Project, this no-wake quiet lake excels for paddle boating, kayaking, sailing, windsurfing, and year-round fishing targeting trophy trout and kokanee salmon, including popular ice fishing in winter.

The park provides over 250 campsites across developed and primitive options with electric hookups, boat ramps, a visitor center, picnic shelters, and miles of hiking trails—including a scenic 5.5-mile route via suspension bridge over the Rio Chama Gorge to neighboring El Vado Lake—plus abundant wildlife viewing of bears, elk, eagles, and more.
